Burr or Blade Coffee Grinder: Which One to Choose and How Much to Spend?

Torrevieja CafésThe main advantage is price. Basic models are inexpensive and compact. Pulse the motor and shake the container to improve consistency. They can be fine for occasional coffee, but repeating a recipe is difficult and some particles over-extract while others under-extract.
Burr grinders
Burrs give better control and repeatability. A solid hand grinder often costs around 40-90 euros. Electric home burr grinders commonly start around 80-130 euros. Espresso requires finer adjustment and usually a larger budget. For filter coffee, consistency and easy adjustment matter more than a long list of features.
Clean the grinder regularly and look for durable burrs, a stable setting and low retention. You do not need the most expensive model if you mainly brew French press or pour-over. If you need help choosing a setting, read our coffee grind size guide.
Spend the minimum only if convenience is not important. A hand burr grinder is often the best value for a careful home brewer. The best grinder is the one you will use consistently.
